Obituary & Life History

James Wilson McNeely, age 65, passed away suddenly February 12, 2010.  Born in Dallas, TX December 1, 1944, James was deaf from birth. He attended the Pilot School for the Deaf in Dallas and the Texas State School for the Deaf in Austin, graduating in 1964. He then attended Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970. Settling in Bowie, Maryland, James had a 30 year career with the United States Post Office, retiring in 2003. After retirement, he moved back to Texas and lived in Kyle, a small town south of Austin. He will be best remembered for his independence, his self reliance, and his love of woodworking. He used his many tools and a significant artistic ability to make numerous unusual creations. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma McNeely, and a brother, Alvie Hobert McNeely. He is survived by his sister Genevieve Guillory of Alexandria, Louisiana, his brother and wife John and Judy McNeely of Friendswood, Texas, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial graveside service will be held Saturday, April 17, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Austin Memorial Cemetery, 2800 Hancock, Austin, TX 78731, 512-453-2320, with Austin-Peel & Sons Funeral Home assisting, 607 E.
