Patricia Maureen Yates
Patricia Maureen (Moran) Yates, a native of California and
resident of Landover Hills, MD, passed away peacefully,
surrounded by her loving husband and three children, on
November 13, 2017, at the Georgetown University Hospital.
Patricia grew up going to St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf
in St. Louis, Missouri, then found her love for American
Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture at the California
School for the Deaf in Riverside (CSDR) at the age of 15.
After graduating from CSDR, she went to Gallaudet University
where she was passionate about acting and participated in
several organizations including Drama clubs and Phi Kappa
Zeta. At Gallaudet, she met her true love, Samuel Yates,
whom then became her husband for nearly 46 years. She was a
loving mother to George Yates, Maureen Yates and Noreen
Yates. She is also survived by her six beautiful
grandchildren, Jarrod, Jevon, Jyles, Magnolia, Rye, and Mika
and by her three brothers, Michael Moran, Kevin Moran and
Thomas Junior Moran.
Patricia worked at the Kendall Demonstration Elementary
School, the Model Secondary School for the Deaf and the
Center on ASL Literacy at Gallaudet University. As an
ASL teacher, she was very popular and always in demand.
Patricia was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt,
sister, cousin, teacher, and friend. She was beautiful,
caring, intelligent, fierce, loyal, unapologetic, nurturing,
funny, brave, and a gifted communicator. She will be deeply
missed and always in our hearts and memories.
